A Skipped Step

I have a personal new beginning on the horizon, so I’ve been pondering the New Moon in Scorpio (October 30th). It squares my lunar nodes (7º Leo and Aquarius), which means it represents a “Skipped Step” on my nodal axis. A square to your nodes offers the chance to leave something in your past behind (like a self-destructive behavior) and take the next step on your soul’s journey. This is an Evolutionary Astrology concept.

Karmically, the Lunar Nodes represent your soul’s path forward (North Node) and the path behind (South Node), and if you don’t believe in karma then you can look at them as what you are familiar with (SN) based on your early life experience, and what is unfamiliar but calls to you because it offers true happiness (NN). Physically, the nodes are not actually celestial bodies, but opposing points of the moon’s orbit that are always exactly 180º apart. The idea is that we are supposed to use the natural gifts of our South Node to propel us towards the true fulfillment that the North Node offers. The further along in life you are, the more you should be traveling towards your NN and away from your SN. But life is a journey and there are many steps on this path, including the Skipped Step.

As an example, my North Node is in Leo as I said. I’m here to embrace self-expression, creativity, passion, living in the moment…all things Leo, but it’s foreign to me somehow, so I find it really uncomfortable (even though my moon is in Leo, go figure). My South Node is in Aquarius, which means I’m used to feeling different, being alone, intellectualizing everything, and just plain being weird, and my safety zone is to be hermit-like and not share my emotions. But in order to find true happiness and fulfillment, I’m gonna have to stop fearing ridicule from others and just express myself openly and creatively, and with passion. Ironically, when I do that people will supposedly embrace me (it’s really hard to do even knowing that from an astrology standpoint!).

A natal square to your nodal axis in your chart usually represents something you didn’t accomplish in your past life, and continue to stumble upon in this life. You have to get it right before you can leave the past behind and finally move forward. Not everyone has a square to their nodal axis, but sometimes (like this New Moon in Scorpio for me), a transit will square your nodes, allowing you to redo a skipped step and move forward. If you do have a natal planet that squares your nodes, this will be a challenge you will have to overcome several times in the course of your life…but you will get better and better at it, more advanced, more skilled. A square can actually be a blessing, in my opinion.

Sometimes people come into your life with personal planets that square your Nodes, and you must accomplish something with that person before you can move on. Although they seem like an outside force, they are really acting as an opportunity to spur you into action that will allow you to propel yourself forward. Incidentally, when someone has a planet that aspects your SN, they are someone from your past life (or lives) and have a familiar feel to them. These are the people you meet that you feel like you have known forever, and just feel natural. If it’s a challenging planet like Pluto, Saturn, or sometimes Mars, then it could be a negative familiar feeling. If it’s the sun, moon, Venus, Mercury, or Jupiter, then it will likely be a positive familiar feeling. When people have planets that aspect your NN you are drawn to them but they can also make you feel uncomfortable because they represent unfamiliar territory that you are drawn to but are also scared to embrace.

New Moon in Scorpio

Tonight is mischief night, and there’s a new moon in Scorpio (7º). New moons are new beginnings, and this one is a subtle, secretive one…yet determined. What you are starting to develop will be kept close to the chest, as Scorpio’s top priority is self-protection.

Mercury is close to the sun/moon at 9º Scorpio, so information is key right now. Perhaps a new insight will prompt your transformation process (Mercury in Scorpio probes into the deepest recesses of the human psyche!). This could be brought on by a conversation, or while doing research, but the “aha!” moment will involve your intuition. Meditation or using tarot/oracle cards can be helpful right now.

Neptune makes a harmonious trine from 9º Pisces, upping the psychic factor during this new moon. It also increases your powers of visualization and faith. Scorpio can dip into the underworld easily, given that its ruling planet is Pluto. But with Neptune’s aid, you are better able to remain positively focused! Trust whatever intel you receive at the emotional level, because not everything can be logically explained when Water signs are dominant.

Whatever steps you decide to take over the next week, know that they are moving you in the right direction. The Lunar Nodes are in the mix, at 11º Virgo (North Node) and Pisces (South Node). Their rulers Mercury and Neptune are part of this new moon as explained above, and they are trine one another. Use this new moon to release what needs to be let go, in order to move on (SN) and propel you into the future (NN)!

The natal house this new moon occurs in, and any aspects to natal planets/angles/nodes, will better explain what is beginning for you. In general, this moon will be felt strongest by those with anything from 6º – 9º of the Fixed or Water signs.

November’s full moon will occur on November 14th at 22º Taurus.

Chiron conjunct South Node

March 24 will see the culmination of Chiron conjunct South Node, at 21º Pisces. This aspect, which has been slowly and quietly building all month, may be hard to distinguish from the rest of the fish soup, but is likely at the heart of the discomfort you can’t put your finger on. It is a call to let go of something painful in your past.

Chiron represents an old wound, and in Pisces it often indicates victim mentality or martyr behavior. The Lunar South Node represents what you need to release so that you can move forward on your journey. Coming together for the first time since 2001, Chiron conjunct South Node is dredging up any vulnerability you still carry, opening old wounds so you can finally transcend the pain.

The asteroid Ceres, which represents the death/birth cycle, is also at 21º Pisces. Ceres adds mothering issues to the mix: nurturing, loss, and trauma. Past pain that involved your mother or children, or any relationship in which you felt abandoned, rise to the surface. In Pisces, you play the victim and the martyr, and seek escape from the harshness of reality, whether you felt abused or were the abuser.

This trio – South Node, Chiron, and Ceres – was involved in the Solar Eclipse on the 8th, and this is a push to release what was brought to the surface at that time. If you felt ambiguity about what to begin, now it’s becoming clear what needs to end. Because we are coming off the heels of the Lunar Eclipse in Libra (today), an imbalanced relationship may be involved: either one in your present, or one from your past that continues to hold shackles around you. It could be the poor relationship you have with yourself, if you suffer from addiction or guilt.

If you have anything around 21º Pisces (or the Mutable signs) this is a pivotal point, where something major will be dissolved. As subtle and strange as this Pisces-heavy time has been, do not underestimate its power; you may not logically understand the subconscious changes at work, but they are still having a major affect. Pisces is frustratingly intangible – like water slipping through your fingers – but it’s also the ultimate finality. Remember, eventually the ocean erodes everything.

Scorpio Sun Sextile North Node

The week before Thanksgiving, Mercury and the Sun do a little dance with the Lunar North Node (at 29º Virgo). You’re presented with an opportunity to expand.

On November 20th, Mercury (at 29º Scorpio) sextiles the Lunar North Node – presenting an opportunity to propel you forward – and then enters Sagittarius. The Sun follows suit next day, forming the sextile on November 21st.

A sextile is an advantage. Mercury presents information: an uncovered truth or revelation. The Sun lets you use the information to make an adjustment. This slight, practical shift can make a monumental difference, over time; that’s North Node in Virgo’s way. Think of this transit as a chance to plug an energy drain.

Because Venus/Mars began a focus on relationship give-and-take on November 2, this piece may be the revelation you need to finally let go of a dysfunctional relationship. Perhaps you’ve been giving too much to a partner who is slow to commit, only to find out he or she is seeing someone else.

This is an opportunity to free up your life, for more personal enjoyment and expansion. Virgo North Node is pushing you forward. This is probably just a confirmation of something you suspected, but weren’t quite sure of, anyway.
