Progressed Full Moon Phase

Progressed Full Moon PhaseI’m coming up on an interesting and rare astrological progression: my progressed Full Moon phase. I’m currently in the middle of writing a series on Lunar Progressions, in which I go into great depth on how your PR moon will affect you in each sign and house. But I haven’t talked about the PR moon phases. They are determined based on the relationship between your progressed Sun and Moon. For example, if your progressed sun is at 1º Virgo, and your progressed moon is at 1º Sagittarius, then they square one another and you are entering a 1st quarter phase which will last for the next several years. You will be experiencing themes of growth, crisis that clarifies what direction to pursue, etc. (I’ll write a future article that goes into more detail about the different phases, but this one focuses on my personal experience so far with the Full Moon phase.)

Just to clarify, progressions are entirely personal to you, unlike transits. They are calculated by speeding up your natal chart by one day for every year of your life. So if you are 40 years old, your progressed chart is the same as the sky 40 days after you were born. They are a predictive tool, and describe how you are currently using the potential of your natal chart. When your progressed planets (usually just the inner ones) change signs or houses, it’s a big deal because a) they move very slowly and b) they mark significant changes in your life.

Your sun, just like in your natal chart, is the most significant progressed planet, and represents your evolving identity and purpose. It changes signs only once every 30 years. The moon is also important, changing signs every 2.5 years, and describes your evolving needs and relationships as well as your general emotional “climate” for that time period. The relationship between the PR sun and moon is how you determine the phase you are in. The PR sun and moon join up once every 30 years, and this represents your “new moon” phase, or the start of a brand new 30-year cycle.

I am coming up on my Full Moon phase, because my PR sun is at 27º Taurus, and my PR moon is at 27º Scorpio (they will be exact on November 25th). This is a culmination, just like the regular Full Moon. It is a time where all your efforts – over the last 15 years – come together, and you can see great success and recognition, or significant loss and the crumbling of everything you’ve worked for. It begins about a 4-year period of picking up the pieces and starting in a new direction, either in the wake of success or the wake of failure. They say the “action” happens right at the beginning, and then the next few years are pretty smooth, because whatever happened happened and you can go from there. It’s kind of like Christmas: you’ve been anticipating it a while, then it’s finally here and you get to open your presents. After that, whether you got what you wanted and are satisfied, or you didn’t and are disappointed, at least it’s over and you are certain either way!

Progressed Full Moon Phase

As an astrologer, I’ve obviously known this was coming. But I have been terrified of it, because up until really the beginning of this month, I wasn’t sure which way my life would go: success or ruin. Over the last few years in my PR Scorpio moon phase, things have been particularly challenging. I really didn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel for a while, but I had to just hope and keep faith that everything would work out, even when it repeatedly looked like it wasn’t. But it looks (knock on wood) like I am going to be okay. I have a great new job that I love, I managed to maintain my home through a very difficult financial struggle, and I am still alive!

I think it’s so interesting that the U.S. election has coincided with my own personal culmination. There was such anticipation and emotional investment nationwide (worldwide, actually), and now that we all know the outcome, we have to pick up the pieces and move on from here. At least we know…right? The Taurus Full Moon today (a supermoon!) has been extremely emotionally taxing, and I didn’t realize it, but it falls close to my PR Ascendant and sextile my natal Ascendant. I think I was too tied up in the events of my nation, and now I have to go back to minding my own business!

On an interesting note, the element of surprise in this election is also clearly present in my own chart; my PR moon at 27º Scorpio is conjunct Uranus (see my progressed chart above). Surprise, surprise, indeed! In addition, transiting Uranus is conjunct my natal Sun in Aries. I don’t particularly enjoy having my life and emotions so tied up in what is going on globally, but I do enjoy a bit of the unexpected to keep life fresh and interesting. It’s also strange that as my life takes a turn for the better on a personal level, it seems like everything else is crumbling. I hope that’s not the case, but at the moment, my country seems to be in turmoil.

In a few months, my PR moon will move into Sagittarius, and then my natal 9th house. I am looking forward to the change, expansion, hopefulness, and adventure of that phase, which will also resonate very well with all my natal Aries planets and Leo moon. After the storm is indeed the calm, and even though this is obvious in my chart, I think that can be said for anyone who is going through their progressed Lunar Full Moon phase.

Progressed Moon in Sagittarius or 9th House

Progressed Moon in Sagittarius or 9th HouseNatal chart progressions are your natal planets advanced a day for each year you have been alive (aka very slowly). They represent how you have evolved, and the current expression of your natal planets.

The progressed moon represents your evolving needs, and takes about 2.5 years to go through each sign. This sign describes your general emotional climate, and the relationships you will have, for that time frame. The natal house your progressed moon is in describes the area of life that is most significant to you, right now.

When you go from PR moon in Scorpio to Sagittarius, it’s like a breath of fresh air. I am about to go through this transition in a few months, and I absolutely can’t wait because PR Scorpio moon is the most difficult! It’s all about survival, living on bare bones, and is often very solitary because you can’t tolerate “fake” relationships during this lunar progression. It’s a sort of all-or-nothing time in your life. But moving on to Sagittarius is when the world opens up again. This is a sign about freedom, adventure, optimism, and fun.

Sag is ruled by Jupiter, which is the planet of expansion. It is often thought of as a benevolent planet, especially in traditional astrology. The depiction of Jupiter is kind of like the ghost of Christmas present, an enormous man surrounded by a cornucopia of food and drinks and happy people. Sagittarius has this same energy…party, excess, and a lightness of being that can’t be weighed down. Sooo different from the darkness and despair of Scorpio! But Jupiter hates being fenced in, so you can get a bit restless or discontent with day-to-day life during PR moon in Sagittarius, especially if you’re not growing.

So when your PR moon switches to Sag, the famine turns to feast. Although very private, Scorpio is an extremely emotional sign, and it’s also very obsessive. So it goes to a dark place and it stays there, or becomes fixated on one thing only. Sagittarius is a fire sign so it’s still emotional, but in a passionate, creative way. You are more open about your feelings and way more likely to laugh off the blues, during this lunar progression. When you were in Scorpio PR moon, you got quiet if something bothered you, maybe plotted your revenge…but now, you will be immediately argumentative if you feel like you have to defend your beliefs. Sag loves a debate, but there are so many holes in the argument!

Sag is also a mutable sign, meaning it goes with the flow. You will find it a lot easier to embrace change now, and even be spontaneous again. Wanderlust is common with this progression! You will feel curious about people from different walks of life, especially different cultures, and want to have easy friendships with fun people. But higher education will also be important so you may be drawn to experienced types, or even pursue a higher degree yourself during this progression…there’s something about college campuses and learning that Sag is drawn to like a moth to a flame! Travel is also something to plan/expect. Opportunity to broaden your horizons just comes about, during this phase, and also to be creative and express yourself.

If your PR moon is transitioning from your natal 8th to 9th house, you’ll experience similar changes, especially more opportunities for growth/higher learning/travel/publishing, because those are the H9 areas. When your PR moon was in H8, you probably had to deal with issues concerning shared resources – your partner’s funds, debts you owe, tax issues, an inheritance after a loved one dies – and generally un-fun things similar to what I described about the Scorpio lunar progression. H8 represents things that aren’t entirely in your control, and where you give up some of your power to someone else. Obviously shared money falls into that category, but also death (loss of a loved one, perhaps), and intimacy with your partner/loved ones, is included.

I had the (unfortunate) experience of having my Scorpio lunar progression AND my 8th house lunar progression at the same time, because they are lined up in my chart. Just before my PR moon went into Scorpio/8th house, I bought a home, and got a new mortgage, the biggest debt I’d ever been responsible for! Then a slew of crappy things happened as soon as it entered Scorpio (still in H7), including being bullied at work, my unsupportive boyfriend broke up with me, and then I had a nervous breakdown and was out of work for two months. Just when things started looking up, PR moon entered my 8th house, and I promptly had a beloved pet die, a pipe burst and destroyed part of my home, and then I got fired from my job. I had other tense things going on in my chart/transits making things worse, but still.

I think the main thing about the transition from Scorpio to Sagittarius, or 8th house to 9th, is this feeling that you survived. You did it, you went through the dark tunnel and came out on the other side, and you’re just so happy about it! That’s why there’s a renewed sense of faith…you realize that there must be a higher power helping you out, because it looked like it was the end, for a while there. So you abandon the dark cubby hole you’ve been living in and come out into the world, because you’re genuinely curious about what’s new out there. Sag tends to be a popular sign because people can’t help but be drawn to your laid back, “it’s all good” attitude. Only someone who has been through hell can come out and not sweat the small stuff, and now that’s you.

Things to know about this new progression: you are being challenged to expand yourself, learn, travel, have adventures, open yourself up to different cultures/perspectives, publish (if applicable), and potentially debate in a legal setting (especially with the H9 progression). Be honest but know you may be too blunt or in people’s faces during this progression. Explore your faith and beliefs but realize you may try to force them down other people’s throats, and it’s really none of your business what other people’s “truths” are. Give into your wanderlust and thirst for fun, but realize you may be seen as increasingly unreliable or immature by those in authority (your boss, parents, teachers, etc.) if you go too far! Experience new things but be cautious of excess in all areas. More is not necessarily better!

This progression is easy for everyone, but most enjoyable for those with natal moon in another fire sign (Aries, Leo). It will be the most challenging for those with natal moon in another mutable sign (Gemini, Virgo, Pisces), but again, the “challenges” of this lunar progression are negligible compared to other phases. You may become disenfranchised with your daily life, like your job for example, or take a lot of risks you regret. Or you might say things too bluntly that hurt others, and regret putting your foot in your mouth. But your likelihood of payoff and popularity is generally higher during this progression.

New Moon in Scorpio

New Moon in ScorpioTonight is mischief night, and there’s a new moon in Scorpio (7º). New moons are new beginnings, and this one is a subtle, secretive one…yet determined. What you are starting to develop will be kept close to the chest, as Scorpio’s top priority is self-protection.

Mercury is close to the sun/moon at 9º Scorpio, so information is key right now. Perhaps a new insight will prompt your transformation process (Mercury in Scorpio probes into the deepest recesses of the human psyche!). This could be brought on by a conversation, or while doing research, but the “aha!” moment will involve your intuition. Meditation or using tarot/oracle cards can be helpful right now.

Neptune makes a harmonious trine from 9º Pisces, upping the psychic factor during this new moon. It also increases your powers of visualization and faith. Scorpio can dip into the underworld easily, given that its ruling planet is Pluto. But with Neptune’s aid, you are better able to remain positively focused! Trust whatever intel you receive at the emotional level, because not everything can be logically explained when Water signs are dominant.

Whatever steps you decide to take over the next week, know that they are moving you in the right direction. The Lunar Nodes are in the mix, at 11º Virgo (North Node) and Pisces (South Node). Their rulers Mercury and Neptune are part of this new moon as explained above, and they are trine one another. Use this new moon to release what needs to be let go, in order to move on (SN) and propel you into the future (NN)!

The natal house this new moon occurs in, and any aspects to natal planets/angles/nodes, will better explain what is beginning for you. In general, this moon will be felt strongest by those with anything from 6º – 9º of the Fixed or Water signs.

November’s full moon will occur on November 14th at 22º Taurus.

Scorpio Season

Scorpio SeasonThe Sun enters Scorpio today, and I am glad. There’s something so cozy about the middle of autumn, when darkness falls early, and there are more leaves on the ground than in the trees. Winter is coming, as Ned Stark would say!

The energy of Scorpio season is intense, dark, and private. This is a time to inwardly reflect on your life and relationships, and uncover the truth. Things can get very black and white during Scorpio season, and taboos may be spoken aloud (especially after Mercury enters Scorpio on October 24th).

Halloween is really the perfect Scorpio holiday. It is a celebration of death and connecting with the unseen world. I read that Halloween has deeper origins in the myth of Atlantis: The civilization had reached its decline, and people were resorting to debauchery and perversions (it sounds a lot like the Capital in The Hunger Games, actually). But, being more advanced than us, they were able to end their civilization by collectively manifesting a meteor. The meteor was set to collide with Earth on November 1st, so on October 31st, they had one final night of celebration. This story is also the origin of the phrase, “Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we shall die.”

Whether or not it’s true, I love this story for a few reasons. Firstly, if you believe in reincarnation, we are the current embodiment of old Atlantis (you can easily see why if you’ve been watching the debauchery and perversion of the current U.S. Presidential election!). Secondly, for a personal reason: I’ve frequently had the same strange dream about Halloween my entire life, and if I died in Atlantis it would make total sense! And thirdly, this story is a great depiction of my favorite Scorpio symbol, the Phoenix, which dies and rises from its own ashes, reborn.

This time of year is not great for those that can’t handle the truth, or shy away from intensity. But if you don’t mind some emotional excavating, then this is the season for you!

Progressed Moon in Scorpio or 8th House

Progressed Moon in Scorpio or 8th HouseThe Progressed Moon represents your evolving needs, relationships, and general emotional state. When your PR Moon sign or house changes, your current needs change, and therefore so does your life. During the shift from Libra to Scorpio (or natal 7th house to 8th), survival becomes your greatest priority. You are entering a pyschology-oriented phase, which lasts about 2.5 years for the Scorpio progression and anywhere from 1-4 years for the 8th house progression, depending on house size. Both of these transits are notoriously difficult for anyone who does not have a natal Scorpio or 8th house moon. The reason for that is because the Moon is exalted in Scorpio’s opposite sign, Taurus, and therefore uncomfortable or in its Fall in Scorpio.

When your PR Moon was in Libra or your 7th house, you were focused on partnerships and social graces. The most uncomfortable things for you at that time were loneliness, ugliness and anything undignified. You sacrificed much (including personal power) to find balance and make sure all your relationships ran smoothly. Libra can wildly swing back and forth trying to find a happy medium, so you may have been a bit argumentative or contrary, and had trouble making decisions! But once PR Moon enters Scorpio/H8, get ready for some significant changes. This may be the most difficult next few years of your life. If you’ve weathered a few, then you know what you’re in for!

Are you comfortable with the emotional intensity this Pluto-ruled sign will bring? If so, you may be able to handle what’s ahead. If not, be prepared for some trying times. Scorpio is an extremist, and everything that happens will be all or nothing during this progression. The change from Libra to Scorpio is a bit shocking, because Libra is an Air sign, and is all about appearances and looking good. Scorpio is a deep-feeling Water sign that cares for none of that! It wants the naked, often ugly truth, right down to the bare bones. In addition, where Libra oscillates between two choices, Fixed Scorpio makes one and sticks with it. There is no going back with this sign…it burns bridges as it walks, and the match was lit deliberately.

So…what’s going to happen when you transition to PR Scorpio Moon? If you are in a committed relationship (Libra) that you’ve been ignoring some serious red flags about, say goodbye. If you have friends that are fickle or flighty, or a lot of superficial acquaintances, watch their backs as they leave. Scorpio wants the most loyal and true of connections, those who are most intimate (on an emotional level, not just physical). The rest will be ripped away from you, whether you’re ready or not. You’ll find out who your true friends are soon enough, because Scorpio is also about the darkness. Who will hold your hand when you’re in it?

Especially with the 8th house progression, you may find out if you can take an existing partnership (7th house) to the next level of intimacy and trust. Because the 8th house is about that which we can’t control, and at a deeper level of closeness, you relinquish your power. That’s what’s so interesting about the Scorpio/H8 Moon progressions: although this is a very control-focused sign, it’s really a consequence of not having power and trying to gain some back! Both Virgo and Scorpio are an awkward 150º away from Aries, the start of the Zodiac, and they must compromise. Virgo regains control via focusing on details. Scorpio is another animal; it’s entire modus operandi is self-protection, and covert actions that involve deeper psychological understanding.

The sooner you can accept that you ultimately have no control during this progression, the faster you will be able to move on from whatever situation you find yourself “stuck” in. Being a Fixed sign, often events that happen during Scorpio or H8 moon progressions are long-term. And don’t listen to the hype about Scorpio being sex-crazed; this sign is actually very hesitant to enter into physically intimate relationships, again, because it really dislikes giving up its power. So if you aren’t in a partnership when this progression begins, don’t be surprised if you want to remain single the entire time! If you do enter a sexual relationship, it will only be with someone you have built trust with…or in dark Scorpio times, are strategically using. If you are already with someone you trust, this can be a great time to explore deeper, more authentic intimacy.

The other issue present during PR Moon in Scorpio and especially the 8th house is debt and shared resources. This means that your debt may become a serious issue, or you may inherit from a loved one, or your partner’s finances may be a wreck, or you may have to deal with a tax situation. Any money that is not solely yours (Taurus/2nd house stuff) is up for scrutiny. Again, because you don’t have complete control over these resources…you share them with a bank, the government, your spouse, etc. Or, they came to you through someone’s passing.

Death is another subject you may have to face. Not necessarily your own, but a loved one may pass in order to give you the opportunity to deal with your inner hangups/feelings about the transformation of death. If you’re already comfortable with it, you can act like a pillar of strength and comfort to others because you are good with uncomfortable topics and situations during this progression. You are fascinated by human emotion and their reactions. And you are very observant of others right now!

Your emotional state during this progression will be rather fixedly calm (which is nice), especially in the face of a crisis as mentioned above. But you may also be in a low-level depressive state for the whole of this progression as well. Do not be afraid to get counseling, as this is a great time for psychoanalysis. You have the strength and quite honestly, fascination, to deal with your demons right now. It’s actually stagnation that will make you despair. When the PR Moon is in a Fixed sign, you tend to reject change, even if it will be good for you! There’s something very dogged and stubborn about Scorpio…it wants to go down with the ship.

This is also a great progression for learning about darker, more taboo subjects, or studying astrology/tarot/psychology on an intense level. This progression will put you in some situation that strips away all superficialities in your life, and forces you to realize you can survive without the things you thought you needed. This is also a progression about regaining your own power, but it order to regain it, you must have it taken away. Maybe your significant other will leave you, or friends reject you, or you’ll go bankrupt, or someone you love will die, but whatever it is, the lesson you’ll learn is that you can survive (and even thrive) in the face of literal or figurative death. You are transforming, and the first part of that transformation is an ending, but the second part is a new beginning. My favorite depiction of Scorpio is the mythical phoenix, who rises from its own ashes.

In general, this Lunar progression is hard for everyone, but easiest for people with natal Moon in Scorpio and less difficult for other Water signs (Cancer, Pisces). This progression will be the most challenging for people with a different natal Fixed Moon (Taurus, Leo, Aquarius). Remember for both the Scorpio and 8th house progression that right now, your light burns brightest the darker it gets in the room.

At Long Last, Mars Stations Direct

At Long Last, Mars Stations DirectI’ve written a fair few posts about Mars retrograde, but finally on Wednesday, June 29th, Mars will station direct at 23º Scorpio. The planet of action stationed retrograde back on April 17th at 8º Sagittarius, and it’s been a wild ride (for some of us). Because the backwards movement began in the sign of the Archer, this reflective period was primarily to identify whether you are moving in the right direction. Hopefully, you’ve gained some clarity and can move forward with any adjustments necessary!

When Mars dipped back into Scorpio (on May 27th), actions/directions you had already begun to question went to a deeper place. Scorpio is the excavator, and digs right down into your psyche, your emotional base. If Mars Rx in Sag had you asking, “Am I moving in the wrong direction,” then Mars Rx in Scorpio asked, “Why?” Scorpio wants to know the psychological reasons behind everything. You may have even turned to astrology (hello there!) for answers!

A retrograde is a private, personal re-assessment, but it’s also an intensification of energy, which can turn to obsession in Scorpio. That sounds like an oxymoron: how can you get more intense about something if you are backing away to question it? Well, even if you’re questioning something, your energy is intense about it because you are focused on the subject. For this particular retrograde, it seems like the first part (Mars Rx in Sag) was a time to try and push the envelope, but end up stumbling. If you’re on the wrong path, you’ll encounter obstacles, because that’s the universe saying turn back! Wrong way! If you then try harder, you’ll encounter even more obstacles. The second part (Mars Rx in Scorpio) was the obsessive portion of this journey: If I’m on the wrong path, then what’s the right one? How’d I even get on this trajectory?

Hopefully, you’ve gotten your answers. Now comes the good part: retracing your steps and getting back on track. From June 29th – August 22nd Mars will be traveling for the final time through 23º Scorpio to 8º Sagittarius. This is your second chance to get it right, make a new choice, and gain clarity. One word of warning: if you started (or re-started) anything during the retrograde, such as a new or refurbished relationship/job/activity/etc., expect things to alter when Mars stations direct. It may not have to dry up entirely, but the course it takes will be a different one than when it began.

After August 22nd? It’s smooth sailing into the future.

Mars Stations Retrograde

Mars Stations RetrogradeApril 17th, Mars stations retrograde at 8º Sagittarius, and will be moving backwards until June 29th. Mars represents action and initiative, which will be delayed during the retrograde. Actions taken in the past few months, specifically since Mars entered the shadow zone, will also have to be reviewed and revisited. Pay special attention to educational, travel, and legal matters (Sagittarius territory).

This retrograde has two parts. The first one is the journey from 8º – 0º Sagittarius (April 17th – May 26th). Mars in Sagittarius represents actions that expand your horizons, bring you to a greater truth, or come from a place of optimism and faith. These are also the areas that will be questioned during the Rx period: truth vs lies, faith vs false hope, and whether your arrow is aimed in the right direction, these days.

The second part is from 29º – 23º Scorpio (May 27th – June 29th), when you’ll have to take the truths that have been reevaluated during the first part, and apply them at a deeper level. Scorpio is darker, more intimate, and more emotional than Sag, so this last leg of the Rx will apply your newfound direction at the very core of who you are.

This is a lengthy retrograde, which will be accompanied by Pluto Rx (starting April 18th) and Mercury Rx (April 28th – May 22nd). Frustrations will arise if you attempt to push actions even though things are going slow or not lining up easily for you. The best bet is to lay off, because this retrograde period is happening to help you reevaluate the direction you’re taking. Why force something that isn’t in your best interest?

Some other things to note: retrograde periods are an internal process, hence the delay of progress in the outside world, but they are also an intensification of the planet’s energy. In this case, you may feel a push to drop all but one or two courses of action (Sag is a Mutable sign that likes to juggle several opportunities at once), when the retrograde begins, and funnel all your energy into the chosen avenue. Also, be aware that anything initiated during an Rx period is likely to change course once the planet stations direct. Actions begun or sexual relationships you initiate will either end or not be the same, come June 29th!

Mars retrograde is a great time to take action on old projects that were put on the back burner, at some point. You can make real headway, because you’ll be in a different frame of mind right now, and see other approaches. Don’t be surprised if you cross paths with old flames during this time, too, and now is a very good time to rekindle an old sexual relationship, if you are so inclined!

If you have natal/progressed planets or angles between 23º Scorpio – 8º Sagittarius, you’ll be affected by this retrograde strongest. Those with natal/progressed planets or angles that oppose Mars retrograde (23º Taurus – 8º Gemini) or square it (23º Leo/Aquarius – 8º Virgo/Pisces) will also feel tension, to a lesser extent.
