Astrology Aspects and Life Lessons

Recently, I found out that someone I was friends with, and romantically involved with for a time, has been deceiving me ever since we met early last year. He was – and as far as I know, still is – in a long term relationship that began before I knew him, and he hid this from me all the while.

Since I found out, I feel like I cannot trust anymore. But I realized today that energy exchange is just another life lesson. Some exchanges are easy, and some are not.

In astrology, this exchange is reflected in mathematical aspects. There are two types: easy and hard. Easy aspects are comfortable, so you enjoy them but don’t learn. Hard aspects are painful, but the source of growth.

If you have planets that are conjunct one another (at the same degree of a sign), they work in tandem. It’s not something you perceive, it’s just part of your subjective experience. This can feel good or bad depending on the nature of the planets and sign.

This man and I had conjunctions between our charts, notably involving both our Lunar South Nodes which means past-life connection and karma. He felt so familiar to me from the moment I met him, and I felt intimate with him quickly.

Trines (120º) are harmonious energy that flows between two planets in the same element;, and is barely noticeable it’s so comfortable. Growth doesn’t come from trines, they are just there for lubrication.

Sextiles (60º) are easy, but noticeable because they are different but compatible elements (earth/water or fire/air). Because you feel it, you can use it to your advantage (but only if a hard aspect spurs you to action).

The square (90º) is the hardest aspect, a clash between signs in different elements that do not get along. This feels tense, and you will feel compelled to take action. But it is also what keeps creating the feelings of excitement and freshness in a relationship. (He and I had tons of squares.)

The opposition (180º) is a challenging aspect acted out with another person, trying to find balance. This one gives you the most perspective. Therm there’s the inconjunct (150º) which is a mix of discomfort and potential talent, between signs that have zero in common.

What I’ve been feeling today, is that some people are going to love you, some are going to hate you, and some are going to be completely ambivalent towards you. There’s really nothing you can do about how another person feels, only about how you feel and how you allow people to treat you. People who just like you and treat you well require little work, and therefore little learning comes from them. But the ones that don’t treat you well are the ones you learn from, and end up discovering new things about yourself.

Lately, I’ve been feeling lonely, and angry about what happened to me, and sad. I feel like a magnet that has been pried apart from another, and I don’t like to feel that way. But I also feel like I learned a lot about myself this past year and a half, and maybe I’ll know how to defend my boundaries better in the future.

Mercury Rx Insights

ireland-1985088_1920.jpg

This Mercury retrograde in Aries has been giving me all sorts of insights to my own behavior, and life in general. It hasn’t been awful for me personally, although I have some friends going through hell during this retrograde. But the Libra full moon was quite dramatic…I got really sick with a stomach bug, and then new (noisy!) neighbors moved in, and I had a meltdown and berated everyone close to me for not offering to bring me anything because I live alone. Then I berated the neighbors for being noisy. Then I was done and had to apologize for the berating, then I got berated by someone for apologizing…it was an endless cycle.  But I feel better now!

As mentioned in my previous post, I switched to WSH system last year, and the spark that set it in motion was realizing that in whole signs, my own Aries planets are in the 2nd house, not the 1st. I got berated (yup) recently by air sign friend for being a subjective thinker, but the truth is, that’s how natal Mercury in Aries functions. I have oppositions to planets in Libra (including Saturn) so it’s not like I don’t consider things carefully; but my decisions tend to be at a gut level first and foremost, and after deliberation I usually circle back to my first instinct anyway. That’s how fire signs work. Also, it’s not my fault Aquariuses over intellectualize their emotions, just saying.

But the thing that struck me about having a 2nd house stellium was the Taurus-y feel. I am Taurus-y on many levels. I am actually very resistant to change, which wouldn’t be someone you’d see in my Placidus chart. But historically I have stayed in relationships, jobs, and residences past their expiration date because I fear the potentially worse situation that could develop if I were to try something different. The 2nd house is all about self-preservation, security, stability, sensuality, material things, self-worth issues….that is all my jam. I typically try not to rock the boat, until a certain point when I crave transformation and burn everything to the ground myself. You can see it natally in the hourglass opposition between my Aries/H2 and Libra/H8 planets, especially Sun-Pluto (my chart is posted on the About page).

Since becoming more cognizant of my own tendencies, I have made an effort to open up and trust the universe, and embrace changes. It is my personal 1 year in numerology so everything I do now is setting me up for the next decade (no pressure!) and I don’t want to be stuck in the same job industry/role, relationship patterns, or even the place I live for the next 9-year cycle. I really don’t. But part of embracing change is getting used to discomfort, I have discovered. If you’re comfortable, you’re not changing. If you’re not changing, your dying. There’s no utopian future where everything lines up and works perfectly…it doesn’t exist on this plane. That’s called death.

Whole Sign House System

I made a significant change to my astrology practice a couple months ago: I switched to whole signs. Prior to that, I was using Polich-Page (which is more or less identical to Placidus, the most popular Western astrology house system and typically the default on any website that generates charts). However, I read some compelling arguments that convinced me to make the switch.

It started with this article by Michelle at AstroFix, who attended a lecture by Demetra George about the topic. To be honest, Michelle’s article alone was enough. Reading this was an epiphany… it changed my whole perspective!

Also, this article by Marina at Darkstar which goes into more depth about the history of whole signs and how it fell to the wayside, and a PDF by Chris Brennan listing 12 reasons why WSH is best. I’m not going to try and explain it myself, because they have done an excellent and thorough job already.

Whole signs offers what I have been looking for: simplification. WHS does not take the Ascendant and put it on the cusp of the 1st house, nor does it put the Midheaven on the cusp of the 10th (gasp!). Instead, the sign of the Ascendant is the 1st house, and the zodiac lines up from there. No splitting signs between houses, no intercepted planets. The angles are no longer house cusps, but sensitive points.

To illustrate the difference, here is my chart first in Placidus, and then in whole signs:

Placidus.png

WSH

You can see in Placidus I have multiple intercepted signs and planets, but all of that is removed in WSH. Signs line up with houses perfectly. This speaks to me because I already practice the concept that sign boundaries are hard lines (Mars at 29º Cancer and Venus at 0º Leo are not conjunct, as an example). To be frank, it spoke to me on a personal level first, because in WSH my Aries and Libra planets moved to H2/H8 respectively, and it was like I saw myself for the first time. Everything in my life made sense in an instant!

It’s nice to still be able to have those aha! moments, even after a lifetime of practicing astrology. Although I haven’t done any readings since the switch, I will be using this house system for all readings going forward, and I feel like it will really take things to the next level.

The Week Ahead: April 25 – May 1

Monday April 25 (no major aspects). Moon is in Sagittarius.

Tuesday April 26, the Sag Moon is void of course from 11:50am to 7:54pm, when it enters Capricorn. A great evening for good times with old friends!

Wednesday April 27, Taurus Sun inconjuncts Mars Rx in Sagittarius. There may be a little discomfort between your actions and objectives; you have practical goals, but restless/scattered energy today means you may not see them through. Go easy on yourself.

Thursday April 28Mercury stations retrograde at 23º Taurus. Good luck! Although you may feel it beginning from Monday on, today is the day technology starts going haywire, traffic becomes unpredictable, and paperwork is a mess. Have patience!

Friday April 29, the Aquarius Moon reaches Last Quarter at 11:29pm. As energy from the Full Moon is released, you may experience a personal crisis. Aquarius isn’t emotional, however, so it would be expressed via sudden detachment. Venus enters Taurus today, as well.

Saturday April 30, Aquarius Moon is void of course from 10:55pm until 10:33am on Sunday, when it enters Pisces.

Sunday May 1, the Sun sextiles Neptune. This is a great day for imaginative work or play, and especially artistic or musical expression, due to the combo of Taurus/Pisces. Enjoy going to the movies with family, escaping into a good book, or spiritual pursuits.

The Week Ahead: April 18 – 24

Monday April 18, Pluto stations retrograde at 17º Capricorn, beginning a period of internal reflection and intense focus on the activities of the house it’s in. Pluto is Rx nearly half the year (it stations direct September 26), so unless you have natal planets around 17º of the Cardinal signs, you may not feel this transit strongly.

Virgo Moon is void of course from 8:29am Monday to 7:23am Tuesday (when it enters Libra).

Tuesday April 19, the Sun enters Taurus, beginning the season of the bull! Taurus is most concerned with self-preservation, peace, beauty, and things it can experience with its five senses. This is a great season to get your finances or budget together, look at real estate, garden, fix up your home, or re-decorate.

Wednesday April 20 (no transits).

Thursday April 21, Libra Moon is void of course from 2:13am to 8:17pm, when it enters Scorpio.

Friday April 22, the Full Moon occurs at 2º Scorpio. This is an intense culmination, and Scorpio takes an all-or-nothing approach: you can have laser-focus on the truth, or cut something out of your life entirely. Venus and Uranus are conjunct as well today, so there is an element of the unpredictable, especially concerning your desires in love, friendship, or finance.

Saturday April 23, Scorpio Moon is void of course from 5:45pm on.

Sunday April 24, Moon enters Sagittarius at 8:46am.

Horoscopes April 11 – 17

Aries

Tuesday, Venus in your sign trines Mars (your ruler) in your opportunities sector, as we enter the last week of your season, Rams. This is a nice way to go out, however! The trine may give you a bit of wanderlust, and surely encourage you to take a chance on opportunities that will expand your horizons (especially travel, educational, legal, and publishing matters), but be mindful of your inclination towards being too impulsive. This weekend, when your ruler (Mars) stations retrograde, you enter into a 10-week period of back-tracking, reconsidering actions you’ve taken these past couple months, and intense, internal review. So, developments on the Venus-Mars issues may be delayed until July, but you’ll have lots to think about! Meanwhile, asteroid Ceres enters your sign on Thursday, and may suss up mothering/abandonment issues, or feelings of needing nurturing/to be nurtured. The way to handle them is your very own style of assertion, independence, and taking physical action.

Taurus

Tuesday, Venus (your ruler) in your hidden sector trines Mars in your sector of intimacy and shared resources. This aspect is more subtle for you, Bulls, as it can involve secret, private desires you decide to take action on – perhaps a relationship you want to take to a deeper level – but can just as easily be about dealing with unconscious fears, such as debt or tax issues (or your partner’s financial woes) that keep you up at night. Whatever it is, on Sunday, when Mars stations retrograde, you’ll have to back off of it for the next 10 weeks because developments are delayed until July (although internally, you’ll be intensely reviewing intimacy/debt issues). On Thursday, asteroid Ceres enters your hidden sector, and mothering or abandonment issues may crop up via dreams or other subconscious ways. While you may not be able to take direct action, you can deal with your need to nurture/be nurtured by lending an ear to loved ones.

Gemini

Tuesday, Venus in your social sector trines Mars in your relationship sector, and your social life can see a boost of energy. Not that you need any help in the arena of networking, but this aspect could prompt the development of a friendship into a partnership (romantic or business). If not, friends and contacts are still charmed by your graceful and diplomatic way of putting others’ needs at the forefront. This weekend, Mars stations retrograde, and developments that began under the Venus trine take a backseat until July. For the next 10 weeks, you’ll be going back over actions taken in committed relationships, and doing a private, internal review of the subject. If you’re not currently attached, you may even encounter a partner from the past. Just remember, whatever you initiate during Mars Rx will take a different turn after it stations direct this summer! Thursday, asteroid Ceres enters your social sector, and friends/groups may bring up mothering or abandonment issues. Deal with it by asserting your independence and taking action.

Cancer

Tuesday, Venus in your career sector trines Mars in your routine sector. This can mean great things on the professional front; you have the inspiration to act on a larger career goal, or get noticed by superiors for your attention to detail and diligence. Likewise, this aspect can make your professional relationships (with the boss, or co-workers) harmonious. When Mars stations retrograde on Sunday, initiative you took in your job, daily schedule, or health and personal habits can take a backseat; things have to be re-assessed for the next 10 weeks, which will be an intense time of quiet self-examination. You may have to rethink some health/fitness moves, or how you are approaching things at work. You’ll be able to revisit whatever the Venus/Mars trine inspires in July (your month, Crabs!). Thursday, the asteroid Ceres enters your career sector, and may stir up mother issues or feelings of abandonment (which you relate to well, Moon-children), ironically on the work front. Deal with them by being assertive and taking independent action, professionally.

Leo

Tuesday, Venus in your opportunity sector trines Mars in your creative sector. This is a great aspect for exciting romance! Your fellow Fire signs (Aries and Sagittarius) are involved, and along with you Lions, ignite a spark in your belly: creative projects, performance, self-expression, travel, publishing, and children are just a few of the areas you may be inspired to act upon! However, on Sunday, Mars stations retrograde; whatever gets started with the trine will be on the back burner for the next 10 weeks. You will be going back over actions taken in the area of projects, talents, children, romance, and ego-expression. There needs to be some intense, internal review of actions taken here, before you’ll see any developments (Mars will station direct again in early July). Thursday, asteroid Ceres enters your opportunity sector, and you have a chance to deal with some mothering or abandonment issues directly, and through action. To nurture yourself and others, think independence and physical activities.

Virgo

Tuesday, Venus in your intimacy sector trines Mars in your domestic sector. The link here may progress an intimate relationship to a joint-living situation, or at least have you begin the process. Too, joint financial issues or debt/tax items can be assisted by actions taken at home or with family. Whatever you are inspired to do, when Mars stations retrograde on Sunday, developments temporarily halt. Over the next 10-week period, you’ll be reassessing actions pertaining to home and family, and will be able to move forward again in July, when Mars stations direct once more. Thursday, the asteroid Ceres enters your intimacy/shared resources sector, and a physically or emotionally intimate relationship (or debt problems) touch upon your mother or abandonment issues. The way to deal is via independence, assertion, being direct, and especially through physical activity. Take chart in this area!

Libra

Tuesday, Venus (your ruler) in your partnership sector trines Mars in your communications sector. This is a fabulous aspect for initiating new relationships, or breathing life into existing ones with some fresh, exciting communication! Likewise, you can charm anyone with your words at the moment, because your natural charisma – rooted in grace, diplomacy, and putting others’ needs at the forefront – is really shining through. You may feel the inspiration to act (something that is typically hard for you to decide upon), but just know that on Sunday, Mars stations retrograde for a 10-week period. During this time, activity on the aforementioned will back off, and you’ll have to privately review what actions you’ve taken in written projects and contracts, with siblings, and in all areas of communication. Come July, you’ll see developments once again. Thursday, asteroid Ceres enters your partnership sector, and feelings of abandonment/mother issues may arise within relationships. The way to deal is independently (NOT by projecting onto your partner!)

Scorpio

Tuesday, Venus in your routine sector trines Mars (your co-ruler) in your resources sector. This can mean some nice developments in finances, perhaps related to a new position you’ve attracted at work! It can also represent a positive connection between your health and fitness routine, and your self-esteem. Keep up the good work! Sunday, Mars stations retrograde, and a 10-week review period begins, specifically about actions you take in your personal finances, real estate, and self-worth issues. Until July, you may not see real developments in the areas inspired by this week’s Venus trine. Thursday, asteroid Ceres enters your routine sector, and you may feel that mother or abandonment issues are being brought up daily; in your job, schedule personal habits, or health. Deal with them through physical action and asserting your independence.

Sagittarius

Tuesday, Venus in your self-expression sector trines Mars in your sign. You could not have a better aspect to promote personal confidence and creativity, even a possible romance! Also, enjoy time spent with your children. It’s all about joy right now! Now is a great time to do something different with your appearance. Sunday, Mars stations retrograde, and for the next 10 weeks you’ll go through a private reassessment of actions you’ve been taking in your life. This doesn’t have to be heavy – you Sag’s enjoy lightness – but you’ll have to take your time, and wait until July for developments. Thursday, the asteroid Ceres enters your creativity sector, and you may feel mother or abandonment issues creeping up as you work on creative projects, romance a lover, or spend time with your kids. Deal with them (and show nurturing) through physical activity and asserting your independence.

Capricorn

Tuesday, Venus in your domestic sector trines Mars in your hidden sector. Although this is a subtle aspect for you Goats, you can tap into your intuition through meditation and dreams, to figure out how to proceed with plans regarding home and family (especially renovations, decor, and relationships). You may get some great ideas, but Sunday, Mars stations retrograde, and actions on the home/family front may take a backseat until July. For the next 10 weeks, you may feel weird as Mars Rx has you doing an internal review of actions you’ve taken recently, in regards to secret desires and fears. You may not even fully understand what is happening, but have patience as your subconscious works it all out. Thursday, asteroid Ceres enters your domestic sector, and mothering/abandonment issues come up as you deal with your family stuff. Show nurturing to yourself and others through physical action and encouraging independence.

Aquarius

Tuesday, Venus in your communication sector trines Mars in your social sector. This aspect is excellent for improving your network and making some new, helpful contacts. You have the ability to say just the right thing, right now! Sunday, Mars stations retrograde, and any advances you make this week may be put on the back burner until July. You’ll be doing a 10-week review of actions taken regarding your group of friends, your social network, and on social media (especially conflicts). Also, you’ll have a private and intense review of what you’re doing to act upon your bigger hopes and wishes. Thursday, asteroid Ceres enters your communication sector, and you may find yourself talking or writing about mothering/abandonment issues more and more. The way to deal is to assert your independence, and take action to nurture yourself.

Pisces

Tuesday, Venus in your personal resource sector trines Mars in your career sector. This can mean wonderful developments in your finances, relationships, and professional endeavors! Your ambition and image can really get you what you want, right now. Sunday, when Mars stations retrograde, these things may take a backseat for a while. You are entering a 10-week review of actions taken on the professional front (and reconsidering any conflicts with your superiors). Although you may be intensely focused on a specific career issue for a while, you can expect developments with work/finances to leap forward once Mars is direct again, in July. Thursday, asteroid Ceres enters your personal resource sector, and mothering/abandonment issues come up surrounding your need for material security. Deal with them by taking action, and asserting your independence (NOT overspending!).

The Week Ahead: April 11 – 17

Monday April 11th, the Gemini Moon is void of course from 2:56pm on, so use the morning to begin (many) new projects, and the afternoon for edits/revisions.

Tuesday April 12th, the Moon enters Cancer (4:06am). A good day for nurturing others. Mercury sextiles Neptune (5:41am), making today an imaginative and visionary one. You can speak with compassion and empathy to others. Venus trines Mars in the afternoon (3:15pm), which allows masculine and feminine energy to work fluidly; great for group projects, or a mid-week date night.

Wednesday April 13th, the Moon reaches its First Quarter at noon, marking a pinnacle in the growth cycle of whatever you began during the Aries New Moon. An emotional crisis can occur, prompting you to meet a challenge.

Thursday April 14th, Moon is void of course until it enters Leo (9:52am), so don’t initiate new projects until mid-morning. Mercury in Taurus enters the shadow zone for its upcoming retrograde (April 28 – May 22). What happens in written projects, contracts, and finances from now until then is what will breakdown during the retrograde. Asteroid Ceres enters Aries today, and the way to nurture/mother/get over abandonment issues is through physical action, and by asserting your independence.

Friday April 15thMercury trines Saturn Rx (10:30pm), making today a good one for structured thinking and disciplined communication. Don’t put off meetings or written projects until next week; you can see tangible results with a little effort, today.

Saturday April 16th, the Leo Moon is void of course from 1:48pm – 7:22pm, making this afternoon a good one for spending time with the kids, or revising a creative project. Venus is inconjunct Jupiter Rx tonight (9:26pm), so take caution in matters of the heart (and wallet): you could go a little further than you intended!

Sunday April 17th, Mars in Sagittarius stations retrograde at 8º (8:14am), and from today through June 29th, actions taken over the past few months will have to be gone back over. Mercury trines Pluto at 5:25am, making today a good one for intense focus on research or reading, and also good for deeper, more truthful/intimate conversations.
